Underwater Mountains Discovered from Space

07.10.2014

30 thousand mountains were discovered on Earth, according to the group of scientists from Europe and USA. Minimal height of discovered peaks is 1,5, the maximum is more than 2 km. So why do these huge geological formations stayed unnoticed until now? The answer is easy: that's because they are located on the bottom of the ocean. Moreover, earlier they were hard to find because of multimeter layer of marine sediments, which shelter mountains.

As it often happens, to see something great you should look down. So this time data from orbit satellites helped the scientists. Due to the data obtained from them, the researchers were able to recognize the outlines of ridges under the water and sediments. Underwater mountains were in two regions of the Earth: the Gulf of Mexico and the South Atlantic. First, these information is important for fishing industry, because the inhabitants of the sea usually gather around the maximum altitude points. Also relief of the seabed plays a significant role in climate change and distribution of heat around the planet.
