Part of the largest Antarctica ice shelf broke away and became one of the biggest icebergs in the entire history of observations. A crack in the Larsen C glacier was noticed by scientists in December last year.

Initially, the length of the crack was 112 kilometers, and by July 2017 it increased 200 kilometers longer. Iceberg was formed in the period from 10 to 12 July. Its area is 5.8 thousand square kilometers, and the approximate weight is trillion tons.

Earlier, the Larsen glacier has lost two parts of its area of 4,000 and 3,000 square kilometers, in 1995 and in the early 2000s. The reason is the climate warming by 2.5 degrees.
