NASA will determine the location of the sunken vessels by satellite. Unlike the treasure seekers, experts are concerned not on the cargo value, but upon the potential danger of these vessels to the environment.

Sunken Ships to Search from Space

In total, according to experts, at the bottom of seas and oceans there are about 3 million vessels, with the majority in the coastal zone. Left unattended, these ships may pollute the water with oil products or heavy metals.

The initiative of monitoring was performed by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and the idea of using Landsat satellites belongs to the scientists of Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. Currently, on satellite images, ships can be seen at a depth of 15 meters.
