Sea Turtles Deliver Females

03.07.2014

Global warming had a strange influence on sea turtles population. Last time gender balance swayed to females. In closest future it may cause population growth, but in the future the population can be seriously reduced because of species feminization and males extinction. The peculiarity of sea turtles is that offspring gender depends not on chromosomes, like gender of human and other mammals, but in the temperature of water, where the egg laid by female ripens. The higher it is, the more likely the newborn baby will be a female.

The peculiarity of sea turtles is that offspring gender depends not on chromosomes, like gender of human and other mammals, but in the temperature of water, where the egg laid by female ripens

Scientists studies this process on the beaches of Cape Verde island, where several years they measured the temperature os sand, in which sea-turtles layed their eggs. They sumed up the information, environment temperature measurments and climate forecast for next hundred years and came to a conclusion that turtles are not threatened by total feminization in the next decades. However, when female population grows and male population resuces, the last ones are harder to be examined. Thousands of female turtles are equipped with satellite transmitters, but the population male turtles, who are under scientific supervision, is ten times less. After all, unlike their female-friends, male sea turtles do not come to the beach, spending all their lives in the ocean.
