Specialists of the Earth Cryosphere Institute (Tyumen) went on an expedition to the Yamal Peninsula to observe unusual lakes. These ponds were formed in funnels, which, in turn, appeared as a result of the gases release from under the earth.

The main task of scientists is to find out how the lake basins characteristics vary, and also to monitor the melting of underground ice layers. Since the summer of 2016 in this region it was anomalously hot, ice can melt more actively. It is already clear that the properties of funnels differ depending on the landscape.

The first funnels in the Yamal Autonomous District were found in 2014. They are located next to the Bovanenkovskoye gas field. They all turned into lakes. Two more craters, in the village of Seyakha and the village of Yaruta, were formed this summer. Such funnels must be investigated, as they are dangerous for the residents of the settlements and herders.
