The International Group of Climatologists managed to establish a link between the loss of ice in the Antarctic and warm undercurrents. Because of these currents, the Antarctica ice cap was reduced also 10 thousand years ago - this was evidenced by the investigation results of plankton shells from the Amundsen Sea bottom.

Plankton Helped Scientists to Find out the Cause of Ice Melting in Antarctica

The reduction of the West Antarctic ice sheet stopped about 7,5 thousand years ago, and in the 40s of the 20th century it began again, as the wind rose changed.

According to the scientists' forecasts, the processes that are taking place now in the area of the West Antarctic ice sheet may in the coming centuries lead to an increase in the world ocean level by 3.5 m.
