New Underwater Volcano Found in Hawaii

Giant mountain was called Kaena, and it is a part of Oahu underwater volcanoes. Previously it was thought that this complex consists of two volcanoes - Waianae and Koolau. However, detailed analysis of the bottom showed that in fact there are three volcanoes. Furthermore, each of the fire mountains is distinguished by chemical structure of lava and by age. "New" volcano turned out to be the oldest: it appeared more than 5 million years ago. Later the Waianae volcano appeared – it was about 3,9 million years ago. And the "youngest" one is Koolau, which was formed about 3 milloin years ago.

Moreover, Kaena is the lowest of them, it rises at the level of 914 meters above the sea, because lava has a too long way through the earth's crust. Scientists also believe that previously the volcano was a real island with sandy beaches, because its lava hardened in a form that could be formed only in the air. And the last two million years the entire Hawaiian archipelago, including volcanoes, have been sinking under water. By the way, experts believe that the volcano eruption is still possible: a relatively fresh lava was found on one side of the volcano.
