Carcasses of 37 sei whales were found on the shore of the Gulf of Penas in Chile. Most likely, whales died at the end of April. A more exact date of death can hardly be established because of the hot climate in these places. Carcasses of mammals have already started to decompose. Experts are still arguing about the causes of death of rare whales. Some scientists believe that whales have committed suicide by jumping ashore.

This version was disputed by German biologists. Carcasses of whales had not typical injuries, and therefore they died at sea - due to an infection or a toxic red tide, caused by algae blooming. Dead carcasses were washed ashore. In any case, this incident is tragic, sei whale is an endangered species. In the world there are only about twelve thousand individuals, and death of forty of them is a significant event.
