Mussels May Disappear by End of Century

Climate change threatens the complete disappearance of mussels in a few decades. Even if this does not happen, eating them will be dangerous. That is the conclusion of the participants of the third annual meeting of the Society for Experimental Biology in Prague.

According to scientists, mussels are threatened with rising sea temperature and a decrease in salinity due to greater precipitation in tropical regions. All this contributes to the development of disease-causing bacteria that produce toxins that can accumulate in shellfish.

Mussels May Disappear by End of Century

These facts are confirmed by experimental breeding of green mussels in India. Mussels, which are grown in water with high temperature and low salt, had serious health problems. Large-scale commercial production can also affect the number of shellfish. The researchers plan to find out how global climate change will affect the populations of oysters and shrimp.
