Lake Baikal Water Protection Zone to Be 10 Times Cut

The Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia intends to reduce the water protection zone of Lake Baikal from 57 to 5.9 thousand sq. km. According to the head of the department Sergey Donskoy, the introduction of changes will not entail a reduction of the lake protection regime due to strict prohibitions on the certain types of activities.

Lake Baikal Water Protection Zone to Be 10 Times  Cut

On the territories entering the water protection zone, sewage discharge, construction of gas stations and industrial facilities that may be a source of pollution are prohibited.

Until 2015, the water protection zone of Lake Baikal stretched for 200 meters from the lake, then it was expanded to 60 kilometers, and it got 159 settlements with a population of about 128.4 thousand people.

Now the boundary of the zone will be adjusted taking into account the proposals of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Appropriate changes in legislation will be prepared by the Ministry of Nature by the spring of 2018.
