It Turned Out Rivers Flowed On Mars Recently

Dutch planetary scientists have found that liquid water, and even rivers existed on the Martian surface about a million years ago, which means recently according to space standards. Signs that Mars had water in large amounts, has been found before, but there was no consensus about the fact, whether it had been liquid or in the form of ice. Some experts believed that in ancient times the Red Planet was too cold for permanent existence of oceans, lakes and rivers.

It Turned Out Rivers Flowed On Mars Recently

Now, after studying images taken by the research probe MRO, scientists from the University of Utrecht (the Netherlands) found that liquid water could have been on Mars. On the slopes of the Source crater many small canals and ravines were discovered. Taking into account their form they could be the result of traffic flow, rather than melting of dry ice and sliding soil. Likewise ravines formed on Earth. Moreover, these processes occurred relatively recently, between 200 thousand and one million years ago. Planetary scientists believe that before the rotation axis of Mars was tilted significantly more than today, because of what the climate was much warmer. This allowed water to remain in liquid form long enough, and the surface of the mysterious planet was more favorable for life than it is commonly believed.
