The water is quite muddy at the mouth, but such conditions are usually unfavorable for corals development. Indicators of salinity and acidity also cannot be called suitable. However, the reef thrives, and its biodiversity has amazed the researchers. Among the inhabitants there are 60 species of sponges, 73 species of fish (many of them are carnivorous), lobsters, starfish. Many species were not previously known.

Amazon reef needs not only extensive studying, but also protection. It turned out that in the mouth of the river oil is planned to be extracted, and for this purpose 80 plots have already been sold which threatens the existence of the unique ecosystem.
