The head of the French Ministry of Environmental Protection, Segolene Royal, signed a law prohibiting the maintenance of killer whales and dolphins in captivity. The prohibition does not apply to animals that are already in licensed by the state aquariums. However, control over them will be strengthened.
In particular, new sizes of oceanariums have been approved - they should be increased at least 1.5 times. Chlorinated water is prohibited. Also, physical contact between people and animals during entertainment should be excluded.
It also includes a ban on the use of chlorinated water in swimming pools and physical contact between animals and visitors.
Such drastic measures are taken by the government after it became known about the use of sedatives in dolphinariums.
