Clouds Examined Under Microscope

US scientists have created a holographic cloud detector, which is installed under the wing of the plane and provides a three-dimensional image of the structure of clouds on the level of the smallest particles.

A device called HOLODEC consists of a laser and a computer. When the plane flies through the cloud, the beam "scans" drops and dust particles, and a special program forms the image. System developers compare it with a microscope, because it zooms the investigated objects 10 000 times. In particular, climate scientists could see that the cumulus clouds actually have very sharp edges. In the future, a detector is planned to analyze the features of the behavior of clouds and more accurate weather forecasts.
