Arctic Ice Area Decreased to a Record This Winter

Every year the Arctic ice expanded to the highest level in February or March and reaches a minimum in autumn. On 22th of March, the ice area amounted to 14.42 million square kilometers. This is 97 000 square kilometers less than in 2015.

The disappearance of the ice is threatening polar bears, additionally, it leads to an increase in temperature on the planet, because the water is dark blue and reflects less sunlight.

Overall, last year was the warmest on Earth, despite attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
