Ants Always Know Where The Water Is

12.02.2013

Researchers from Siberian Department of Russian Academy of Sciences discovered that ants choose a place for the anthill in mountain permafrost upon several special conditions. The insects always inhabit places with an access to pure unfrozen water, which is available only at the cracks of permafrost shell. Scientists came to this conclusion observing ants that inhabit the nival level of Zakarpattia of the Carpathian Mountains.

Ants might predict earthquakes

These observations might be really useful for applied sciences, such as geophysics. Cracks in the permafrost shell indicate a specific seismic activity of the place due to a geological faults. Therefore, now geologists should search for some anthills prior to using a conventional method of electric tomography.
