Studies of the remains showed that it belongs to the genus of Machimosaurus, a giant Jurassic saltwater crocodiles. Its weight was about three tons. The crocodile was found near the town of Tataouine, in desert, in the place where once water waves were splashing. The crocodile ate turtles and fish which inhabited in the lagoon in excess.

Meanwhile, the ancient freshwater crocodiles were still larger. For example, Sarcosuchus imperator, which lived about 110 million years ago, reached 12 meters long and weighed about eight tons.
