The US Fish and Wildlife Service have reported that the American Manatee is no longer considered as endangered animal. The population of these mammals has reached 6,600 only in Florida. Nevertheless, «gentle giants» still need protection.

American Manatee is no Longer Considered as Endangered Species

The American manatee is still under threat, so measures are needed to preserve habitats and birth control, experts say. Some animal rights activists even believe that the deprivation of the status endangered species from the manatee is wrong, because it makes the population more vulnerable.

This species has been endangered for several decades in a row. Manatees were on the verge of extinction due to a man. Although hunting them for a long time was banned, animals often died when they collided with motor boats propellers or as a result of fishing gear swallowing.
