Specialists of the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and the University of Brasilia (Brazil) found that the Amazon is much older than previously thought. Its age is estimated at 9.4 - 9 million years.

Up to this point it was assumed that the main river of Brazil, formed just 2.6 million years ago. Geochemical and palynological analysis of sediments, samples of which were taken from a depth of more than 4.5 kilometers below sea level from wells that were drilled in search of hydrocarbons, helped to clarify the data.
