A New Grand Canyon Discovered under the Galciers of Antarctics

Antarctic Ice Shield covers a gigantic riftThere is a gigantic rift valley under the ice shield of the Antarctics, scientists say. Its territory is equal to Grand Canyon. This rift might enhance the process of ice melting in the Antarctics.

A 1.6 km deep fault was discovered with a radar that scans the ice down to 2.5 thousand km. The rift is situated under Ferrigno Ice Stream that flows into the Eltanin Bay of Bellingshausen Sea.

Discovery of this rift may lead to understanding why the western coast of the Antarctics gets rid of ice shield faster than the eastern. Rift valley is connected to the Antarctic Ocean.
