Eco-Village: Harvest Without Damage

Vegetables and fruits straight from the garden, a shady garden, fresh air - what could be better? Especially if you use save water and use methods which are safe for the environment and personal health. It is easier than you think!

Set the dry toilet. Village outhouse is not necessarily a rickety shed where not only guests, but also the owners, are scared to come in. Modern biotoilets are becoming increasingly popular. But some of them apply chemical odor compositions containing formaldehyde for recycling and disposal, which can not only cause allergies but also do harm to the environment. Even if a country house has a toilet and sewage tank, it can deliver additional water flow. The alternative dry toilet was invented by Finnish engineer Tapio Raita in 1978. Since then these devices has been successfully used in Finland, and not only in this country. They not only save water, but also produce compost, which can be safely used to fertilize the soil. The filler is a mixture of peat and sawdust. No unpleasant odor of toilets is felt if there’s a properly installed vent pipe through which carbon dioxide, water vapor and heat are ejected, and oxygen enters inside.

Turn garbage into fertilizer. Excellent compost also can be obtained from food waste. Spoiled fruits, vegetables, cereals, tea leaves from tea, coffee grounds will do. All this must be put in layers in a pit or a box. Sawdust, grass cuttings, cut threads, fabric and even paper can be recycled in the same way. The main thing is to stir the heap periodically to ensure air flow and to cover it to keep the heat inside. A few months later a fertilizer is ready, and it can be spread on the surface of the beds. Never try to use leftover meat, fish feces or pets – it will interrupt the process of composting!

In addition to compost, other organic fertilizers contribute to increasing soil fertility. These are wood ash or leaf humus. Vegetables and fruit grown like that can truly be called environmentally friendly, though you will not achieve record harvests without the chemicals.

Collect rainwater. Lingering summer rain is not a reason for sadness, it's a chance to stock up on fresh water, which is really useful on the farm! And not only for irrigation, but also for washing machines, cleaning and laundry – you won’t have to spend water from the well or running water for this purpose. Unfortunately, rain water is not suitable for showering or washing dishes without serious filtering, especially if the cottage is close to the metropolis or plants.

On average, up to 2500 liters flow from one small roof in the middle of the season. To collect this gift of heaven it’s needed to install the drain and connect it to the tank. Note: Before starting to work, check the material from which the roof is made of. If it contains asbestos (for example, slate), copper or lead, the collection of water should be abandoned. But clay tiles, PVC and galvanized steel are perfectly safe.

The larger the storage tank is, the greater the savings are, because the water will be able to stock up for a few months. The reservoir must always have a filter to prevent leaves and other debris, as well as a hole to drain excess fluid. Some Polypropylene look like clay jugs or barrels, and can decorate your site.

Avoid chemical insecticides. Collecting the Colorado potato beetle with hands or spraying the orchard and garden with liters of chemical poison – none of us is happy with this. But pests are not asleep, the crop is threatened. There is still another means, proven by our ancestors: to plant a plant-repellent. For example, Nasturtium repels aphids, cabbage caterpillars, whitefly and our favorite Colorado potato beetle. Marigolds have similar properties. Ants and apple moth can not stand wormwood, flea beetle - mint. A tansy will drive out mosquitoes and flies from your porch. We’re not talking about complete disposal of the insects, but such neighboring plants will significantly reduce their number. You can also spray the planting infusions and decoctions of plants insecticides. Such solutions are less dangerous to humans and animals than chemicals. Tobacco, camomile, horseradish, onion peel, pepper, marigold, dandelion, nightshade are used for their preparation. For example, infusion of garlic helps in the fight against spider mites and aphids.

Бархатцы не только радуют глаз, но и отпугивают вредителей

Another environmentally friendly insecticide is…a bird. If you want them to settle in your garden, provide them with suitable conditions. Most of all they like to nest on decorative shrubs. Birdhouses on trees will also provide you with a squad of larvae eaters.

Set the solar lamps. Of course, no one wants to stumble moving in the dark garden. In addition, the light allows us to admire the flower beds at any time of the day and to create comfort. So, do not entangle all your possessions and spend electric wire because solar-powered lamps are now available to all. The cost of the flashlight is low, and no tools are needed to install them along the paths or flower beds.

During the day, the batteries are charged, and at dusk lamps automatically switch on. Design can be not only classical. There are lamps in the shape of butterflies, fairy tale characters or tulips. You can also purchase garlands or real street lights working by solar energy. And let there be light!
